The 2014 Santa Cruz Triathlon featured three new elements, all of which will continue in the 2015 event:
- Jennifer Squires, a certified USA Triathlon race director, took over leadership of the event.
- The bike course shifted to West Cliff Drive , an iconic stretch of coastline from Cowell Beach, past the Mark Abbott Memorial Lighthouse to Natural Bridges State Beach. Moving the bike course to West Cliff Drive returned the bike section of the race to 40 kilometers (24.85 miles), the standard for an Olympic-distance triathlon. It also resulted in fewer traffic impacts to Westside residents and visitors.
- Also in 2014, the Santa Cruz Triathlon launched a new category to pit the talented and very competitive triathletes against each other, regardless of age. The Open Wave allowed top racers push one another to personal bests.
